CREST HAVEN – Recent sexually transmitted disease reports from the Center of Disease Control revealed that sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis are at an all-time high since 2012, according to a release.
Cape May County Department of Health offers free confidential STD testing every Monday by appointment. The health department also offers walk-in days every Tuesday 1 p.m.-5:30 p.m., and every Thursday 9 a.m.-noon.
Call (609) 465-1194 with any questions today.
“New Jersey Department of Health’s data shows that sexually transmitted disease rates have risen 25 percent, which makes it more important than ever to get tested. STDs are preventable and treatable, but if left untreated they can lead to serious health complications, such as infertility,” stated Kevin Thomas, health officer at the Cape May County Department of Health.
Most sexually transmitted diseases are transmitted by contact with infected body fluids such as blood, vaginal fluids, or semen. Abstinence is the most reliable way to prevent an STD.
Other ways to prevent STDs include reducing sex partners, mutual monogamy, and proper use of a condom. It is possible to become infected with more than one STD at a time, which makes it even more important to know your risk, and to get tested.
Anyone who is sexually active is at risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease. Talk to your healthcare provider about how to lower your risk and about getting tested.
The Cape May County Department of Health offers a wide range high quality and affordable reproductive health programs, such as cervical cancer screening, pap tests, pregnancy tests and much more. Call (609) 465-1194 or visit www.cmchealth.net for more information.
