The Fishing Line: Thank God for Fish

By Carolyn Miller

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to reflect on the bounty of the harvest, the harvest of the sea. Be thankful for everyday you were able to get out to fish and for the Creator’s blessing of fish in the sea.
Capt. Ray, Tiderunner, Cape May, reports the striper fishing has picked up and is getting closer to normal for this time of year. With the high winds the water remained very brown around the inlet and beach front area so they were fishing the back bay areas where the water was clear enough for our flies to be seen.
Water in the back looked great and he found the best fishing to be on the out going tides and working shallow creek mouths and sod bank out flows. Mostly small stripers 15 to 26 inches but he says it was lots of fun on fly rods in 2 to 4 feet of water.
Chartreuse/white deceivers and clousers fished on intermediate line proved to be very productive. Moderate temperatures and light winds going into dusk, topped off with beautiful sunsets made good days of fishing even better. His best day: catching15 stripers on chartreuse flies using intermediate line.
Striper fishing in the Cape May Rips turned on, too, according to Sterling Harbor. Numerous fish were caught in the 20 to 40 pound range while drifting with live spot or eels.
Chunking for stripers in the Delaware Bay was sporadic, but some boats did have good catches. Togging remains excellent around the jetties and inshore wrecks, and don’t forget the sea bass. In the Back Bays, schoolie size stripers remain, with good catches using clam bellies or rubber swim shads around the sod banks.
NJ DEP is proposing to readopt the Oysters Rules, N.J.A.C. 7:25A, without amendment. The rules govern the management and harvest of oysters from the Delaware River, Delaware Bay and their tributaries. These rules have been developed in concert with the participants of the fishery involved.
No public hearings are scheduled for this proposal, however, written comments may be submitted by Jan. 14, 2011. To view the notice, visit http://www.nj.gov/dep/rules/notices/111510a.html.
