The Fishing Line: National Marina Day

By Carolyn Miller

Make Plans Now to Go Boating Saturday, June 12 on “Boat. Fish. Live. At National Marina Day”
Recreational boaters know that marinas are family-friendly gateways to the water, and they also help support local economies.
“The day is part of National Fishing and Boating Week, which celebrates the boating lifestyle,” said Mike Pellerin, vice president of development for (BoatUS).
Sterling Harbor Marina reports drumfish at Slaughter Beach. Scott Wheeler reported four drum in the 40-pound range on the Big Bone out of Wildwood.
Striped Bass were reported near Bayshore Channel in the Delaware Bay using fresh clam for bait.
In the surf, stripers are being caught on clam in North Wildwood and stripers and drumfish are being caught at Poverty Beach.
In the back-bays snapper blues were caught on mackerel and schoolie stripers are being caught on clam.
There are plenty of summer flounder in the back-bays and the anticipation is building for opening day of the season on May 29.
The first crabs of the year showed up and crabbing should improve each week, as the water warms up.
Stop by Sterling Harbor Bait & Tackle to weigh in your flounder on May 29 during the second annual Opening Day Fluke Contest. No registration and no entry fee. Flounder will be weighed between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Captain Ray, Tide Runner, Cape May says fly fishing this week was the best so far. Good amounts of bait are showing around the inlet areas with stripers and sea herring mixed in. The sea herring liked the small bay anchovy size jiggie and clouser flies fished on 300 grain sinking lines stripped pretty fast.
He kept some of the herring to cut and salt down for fluke bait when the season opens.
The striper action was best using larger 5-inch clouser flies, with chart/white/olive patterns producing the best on either sinking or intermediate lines, using long slower stripping action.
The best 4-hour fly fishing trip of the week produced 17 stripers with four keeper size up to 30-inches. All fish were released.
Ray also saw a few big bluefish roaming around and had a big one bite off a fly right at boat side.
At Grassy Sound Marina, North Wildwood Blvd., stripers on clam, bluefish on mullet and mackerel, and snapper blues on mackerel were caught off the fishing pier.
A confirmed report of a 30+ inch flounder caught and released using herring during slack tide while fishing for stripers off the Stone Harbor free bridge.
Miss Chris, Cape May, is bass fishing every day at 8 a.m. and four-hour trips on the weekends. They have had good success on night trips for drum up to 72-pounds. George Tipp, Bensalem had drum at 45 and 52 pounds; Steve Cantonese, Philadelphia, one at 72-pounds; Dean Neander, Philadelphia, at 45 and 50-pounds
Be sure to get your fishing report to me so I can include your info and photos. Send your fish stories and photos to cmiller@cmcherald.com. ll photos submitted appear at SeeMyBigFish.com.
