Tournament of Bands coming to the Wildwoods

By On Deck Staff

Marching bands, indoor guard, jazz bands, and percussion and dance teams take over the Wildwoods Convention Center April 30 through May 3.
The Wildwoods Convention Center and the Middle Township Performing Arts Center will be the hosts for the Tournament of Bands competitions, Thursday, April 30 through Sunday, May 3.
Participants in the Tournament of Bands encompass 200 units from nine states, and range from middle school through college level performers in a wide variety of music-related groups, including marching bands, indoor guard, majorette, percussion and dance teams, as well as jazz bands.
Bands will travel from Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia to compete.
The variety of unique styles incorporated into each performance gets more creative every year.
All classes will be judged on the following criteria: quality of sound, balance/blend, interpretation, musicality, rhythm, solos/improv, and repertoire.
Gold, silver and bronze awards will be presented to each group in each class.
The Wildwoods Convention Center will host the competitions on all days with the exception of Friday, May 1 at 6 p.m., when competitions move to the Middle Township Performing Arts Center in Cape May Courthouse.
The Tournament of Bands is one of the largest educational competitive band organizations in the country.
Founded in 1972 by the National Judges Association, it has grown to over 400 active school and independent organizations.
As part of their commitment to education, scholarships totaling more than $100,000 have been awarded to graduating senior students for use at colleges and universities throughout the United States.
