CAPE MAY – Philly folky soul singer/songwriter Roger Silverberg will perform Fri., March 30, at Cape May’s Merion Inn at 11 p.m. on guitar and on the grand piano. His appearance is part of Singer/Songwriter Cape May, a two day conference featuring evening live music showcases in 15 different venues. There is no admission to attend the evening showcases.
Roger is touring regionally in support of his newest album, Major Seventh Heaven. It definitely takes a more retro classic pop/Philly Soul approach.
Roger is a Philadelphia native who taught himself to play by soaking in the sounds he heard on the AM radio dial in the late 50s through the 60s, particularly WIBG, WDAS, WHAT, and WFIL That music still figures prominently as a foundation for doing his own songs. He began to take his songwriting seriously back when the 1960s were turning into the 1970s, a heyday for singer/songwriters.
A relocation to New York in 1982 placed Roger squarely in the middle of an active Greenwich Village scene. Roger played the open mics, on the street, and even at some of the venues that are still operating some thirty years on. The New York experience triggered a wave of new songs, some of which Roger still puts into his set.
Performing steadily from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s, by late 1986 Roger had to step back from live performance to attend to parental responsibilities. While he never stopped playing guitar and piano, he concedes that his withdrawal from the music scene adversely effected his songwriting, both in quality and in quantity. However, by 1998, with the children a little more self-reliant, the songwriting returned and with it so did Roger to live performance.
Roger Silverberg is currently touring regionally to support Major Seventh Heaven, his third released album.
