COURT HOUSE – Teens 12 to 18-years-old are invited to participate in one of two free workshops with famed comic book illustrators and authors at the library here July 7 and 8 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Teens will learn how to create their own short mini-comic from start to finish from Raina Telgemeier, illustrator of ‘The Babysitters Club” graphic novels, and David Roman illustrator of “Jax Epoch” and writer of “Agnes Quill.” They will give an overview of the entire process, which includes writing a story, planning it out, drawing and creating a book to take home. All levels of writing and drawing talent are welcome.
“We’ll also talk about art styles, writing manga-style comics and American-style comics, how we get ideas and how to get your work seen by lots of people,” Telgemeier said.
Teens will benefit from this workshop because they will see what goes into making a comic from start to finish, from idea to printed work.
“We know a lot of people who are more interested in drawing more than writing, or vice versa. We’ll work on both skills. Everyone will have the tools at hand to create something they’re proud of,” Telgemeier said.
She said her interest in comics began by reading the funnies in the newspaper, then reading graphic novels, alternative comics, and manga, a Japanese style.
“Making my own comics was something I enjoyed so much, I did it for fun until it became my career,” she said.
As for the state of the comic business in general, Telgemeier said it’s more exciting than ever.
“Lots of book publishers have begun publishing comics (like her publisher, Scholastic, who published her Babysitters Club adaptations, (as well as the BONE series) and they’re easy to find in bookstores and libraries,” Telgemeier said.
“There are comics available to suit a huge variety of interests. For example, Dave’s working on a graphic novel about kids who go to school in outer space and I’m working on a graphic novel about having braces. The two of us recently wrote an X-Men shoujo manga. Really, there is something for everyone.”
