Cape May Music Festival, an eclectic mix

By On Deck Staff

An eclectic mix of music comes to Cape May during the popular World Traditions series at the 20th Annual Cape May Music Festival, presented by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC), May 17-June 11.
Experience music from around the world including Irish, Jazz, Brass Band, and Klezmer.
Gregory Grene, leader and founding member of The Prodigals, one of the foremost Celtic rock bands in the United States, kicks off the festival with his acoustic mix on Sunday, May 17.
Grene grew up between Cavan, Ireland and Chicago. His acoustic music has traditional Irish melodic roots and influences ranging from jazz to Cajun.
Celebrate Memorial Day Weekend with a performance by the Atlantic Brass Band on Sunday, May 24. Founded in 1984, the Atlantic Brass Band has made a name for itself as an ensemble dedicated to a high level of musicianship and spirited performances.
Artists in Residence at Rowan University in Glassboro, the band has performed with world-renowned brass soloists and shared the stage with stellar brass ensembles and bands from England and Italy. Under the baton of Salvatore Scarpa, this 35-piece band brings a robust energy when performing their patriotic salute to American music.
The Fabulous Shpielkehs make their Cape May Music Festival debut on Sunday, May 31.
Elaine Hoffman Watts is the Jewish grandmother that you always wished you had. Hoffman was the first female percussionist to graduate from the Curtis Institute of Music and Winner of the 2007 National Endowment for the Arts award for Klezmer drumming.
The final world-traditions concert features a Cape May favorite. George Mesterhazy and Friends take to the stage on Sunday, June 7. Cape May’s favorite jazz pianist and Grammy nominee takes to the keyboards for an evening of music from the American songbook.
His performing and arranging credits include the two Grammy-nominated Shirley Horn recordings “Loving You” and “May The Music Never End.”
All World Traditions concerts are at 8 p.m. at the Paul W. Schmidtchen Theatre in Lower Cape May Regional High School, 687 Route 9. General admission is $25, seniors $20, and students $10.
