LAWRENCE,
STEPHEN WAYNE
Stephen Wayne Lawrence, 79, passed away on March 26, 2025. Born in Washington DC, he was the son of the late William Joseph Lawrence and Geraldine Ellington Lawrence.
Stephen (Steve) was a member of Saint Luke's Ordinariate Catholic Church in Fort Washington, Maryland and a graduate of Furman University (BS) and University of Maryland (Masters). Steve taught high school science in the Prince George's County Public School system for 30 years and, along with his wife Jane, owned and operated the Jade East Motel in North Wildwood, NJ since 1979.
Steve was a faithful man and avid churchgoer, serving as an acolyte at his church. He was a 'maker,' and liked using his hands to craft furniture, build models and enjoyed his hobby as a train enthusiast. Steve loved and excelled at sports, particularly basketball, and played competitively throughout his life and recently competed in the senior Olympics (Minnesota 2018). He also enjoyed golf, tennis and driving his Austin Healey around town in Wildwood, NJ. Hardly a day went by where Steve wasn't doing something active and he continued riding around the neighborhood on his bike until his last days. He was known for his good nature and warm hugs, and loved nothing more than spending time with his family and was never happier than when they were all gathered together.
He is survived by his loving wife and high school sweetheart, Jane Branyan Lawrence. He is also survived by his sons Matthew William Lawrence, and Mark Stephen Lawrence (Cary), and daughter Elizabeth Lawrence Short (Chris). He is also survived by his eight grandchildren, Dean, Christian, Madeleine, Carter, Olivia, Spencer, Nash and Juno.
A private service will be held for the immediate family. Charity donations can be sent to Saint Luke's Ordinariate Catholic Church at 2315 Brinkley Rd. Ft. Washington, MD 20744.
