CREST HAVEN – The Cape May County Airport is getting a new terminal. To make the terminal more inviting, the county will tap a pool of landscape architects for design service ideas to offer upgrades on Essex Road.

At the Board of County Commissioners meeting, Aug. 22, a resolution was approved to use designers’ creative abilities.

Using the request for proposals, the county Planning Department seeks a preliminary site design and cost estimates along Essex Road and a public park adjacent to the terminal building.

That structure and a government services building and Tech Village are among the additions to draw more private businesses to the airport complex and better serve the public.

The county owns the airport and has an agreement with the Delaware River and Bay Authority to operate the facility.

Academy Grads Earn College Credits

The county and Atlantic Cape Community College agreed, via a resolution passed Aug. 22, that graduates of the county Police Training Academy and county Corrections Academy may obtain college credits “for competencies mastered” at the academy.

The county’s website states that the academy holds a 21-week, 840-hour Residential Basic Course for Police Officers and a 460-hour Special Police Officer Class Two program.

The website continues, “An articulation agreement with Atlantic Cape Community College awards the Basic Course student with 15 credits upon completion of the Basic Training Courses at the Cape May County Police Academy. These credits are officially awarded upon enrollment and successful completion of the remaining general education courses and career area courses in the Associate in Science Degree Program.”

Franklin Street School Change Order

At the meeting, a change order for $147,889 was approved for Cape May-based Michael Calafati Architect LLC for additional services in rehabilitating the historic Franklin Street School in Cape May.

The resolution noted previous amounts of $14,286 Sept. 8, 2020, $44,866 May 11, 2021, and $10,587 April 12, 2022.

The document states that the change orders “should take the project to completion barring any additional corrections of problems arising from the unknown.”

The sum to the architect is the county’s “agreed upon one-third obligation.”

The firm’s website states it “specializes in the preservation of historic structures, especially those in the nonprofit and public realm.”

Name Shaffer to MHADA Board

The board appointed Lisa M. Shaffer, of Cape May, as a member of the Mental Health, Alcohol, and Drug Abuse Board. Her term will end June 30, 2026.

Members of that board serve as volunteers and receive no compensation.

Pump Station Change Order

The board approved an Agate Construction Co. Inc. change order for $122,871 for additional work at the Fishing Creek Pump Station and drainage improvements in Lower Township.

County Buys Erma’s 2001 Pumper

A 2001 Emergency One Cyclone pumper, worth $30,000, will replace a 1987 Pierce pumper at the county Public Safety Training Center on Crest Haven Road.

The board approved the purchase Aug. 22. The Erma truck will primarily be used for training at the center. Its use will reduce the reliance on outside fire companies and can also be used to aid local departments in the event of an emergency.
