AVALON – Greg “Chet” Johnson has been appointed to the Avalon Borough Council to fill the vacated seat of Mayor John McCorristin. Johnson was sworn in by Mayor McCorristin at the July 26th meeting of Borough Council.

“I am honored and excited to be part of the leadership team in this great community,” Johnson said. “I have lived in Avalon for 30 years and have seen first-hand how the team approach is the right approach for responsive government that serves the people. I look forward to contributing to the community loved by me and my family”.

McCorristin was elected mayor on May 9th, 2023. Upon his acceptance of and swearing in to the position of Mayor at the July 3, 2023 reorganization meeting, the vacancy was created within Borough Council. Council unanimously approved the appointment of Johnson during the July 12th, 2023, Council meeting. Johnson will continue to serve until, by state statute, the voters elect a new Councilmember-at-Large to fill the unexpired term of John McCorristin at the November 7, 2023, general election.

Johnson leaves his service on the Avalon Planning and Zoning Board where he served two consecutive terms as Chairman. He is married to his wife Sandy for 43 years, and his six children all attended Avalon Elementary School, representing the fifth generation of his family with Avalon roots. For the past 40 years he has worked for HIBU/HIG, coordinating numerous mergers and acquisitions. Johnson’s expertise is in digital marketing, public speaking, budget and finance, and motivational training.
