ERMA – A fire that began before winter storm Blair arrived damaged multiple unoccupied trailers at the Seashore Campground on Seashore Road Sunday.
According to information provided by the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office, five trailers were destroyed and several more were damaged from the fire at the seasonal campground.
According to the Erma Volunteer Fire Company Facebook page, the Villas, Town Bank, Erma and Rio Grande fire companies were dispatched on Sunday, Jan. 5, at around 4:30 p.m. to the campground for a reported structure fire.
When chief officers arrived on the scene they confirmed heavy fire conditions involving several mobile homes, campers and propane tanks. Photos posted on Facebook showed heavy, dark smoke that could be seen for a long distance.
Information posted via Cape May Fire Wire said crews place seven hand lines into service and requests were made for tankers from Rio Grande and Green Creek fire companies, as well as an engine from the West Cape May fire company.
Units on scene were the Erma Volunteer Fire Company engine, squad and tanker, Villas Volunteer Fire Company tanker and squad, Town Bank Volunteer Fire Company tender, Rio Grande Volunteer Fire Company squad and tanker, Green Creek Volunteer Fire Company tanker, the West Cape May Volunteer Fire Company squad 57 and MTAC rehab unit.
The fire is under investigation by the Lower Township Bureau of Fire Safety and the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office.
