WILDWOOD CREST – Police arrested a man who was allegedly passed out in a vehicle with the motor running and found him to be impaired and in possession of various weapons.
On Sunday, June 16, at 3:30 a.m., Wildwood Crest Police Corporal William Gianakopoulos was on patrol in the area of Bayview and Preston avenues, when he observed a vehicle with its engine running parked facing the wrong direction. When Gianakopoulos approached the vehicle, the engine was revving and the driver, Samuel Beatty, 24, of Haddon Township, was unconscious in the driver seat with his foot on the gas pedal. Beatty showed obvious signs of impairment but refused officers’ orders to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety testing.
As a result, Beatty was placed under arrest for suspicion of DWI and obstruction. A search of his vehicle following the arrest revealed a large-capacity cannister of pepper spray, a .22 caliber revolver, a .177 caliber metal BB gun, and several pocketknives.
Beatty was charged with second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun; second-degree possession of a handgun for unlawful purpose; third-degree unlawful possession of a BB gun; third-degree unlawful possession of a large-capacity sprayer of pepper spray; four fourth-degree counts of unlawful possession of knives; fourth-degree possession of an imitation firearm; obstruction of justice, a disorderly persons offense; driving while intoxicated; refusal to submit to breath testing; sleeping in a motor vehicle, a local ordinance violation; and numerous other traffic offenses.
Beatty was lodged in the Cape May County Correctional Facility.
