COLD SPRING – For the 13th year, veterans gathered on a foggy, misty Dec. 14 in Price Hall by Cold Spring Presbyterian Cemetery to place wreaths. In so doing they paid tribute to fallen comrades, honored those who served and taught youngsters freedom’s value.
The Wreaths Across America ceremony was held indoors for only the third time according to Rob Riehl, Wreaths Across American location coordinator, master of ceremonies at the event.
Thirteen wreaths were placed by members of veterans’ and civic groups. Several hundred wreaths were placed on veterans’ graves at the cemetery.
Participating organizations included U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary 86, Lower Township; American Legion Post 193, Cape May; Ancient Order of Hibernians of North Wildwood; Cape May County Emerald Society; Cape May Patriots Chapter DAR; Greater Cape May Elks Lodge 2839; Greater Wildwood Elks Lodge 1896; Jersey Cape Military Spouses Club; Kiwanis Club of Cape May; Property Owners Association of Cape May Beach; Seniors Citizens of North Cape May; Vietnam Veterans of American; VFW Post 386, Cape May.
The U.S. Coast Guard Training Center, Cape May ceremonial detail attended, presented colors and played “Taps.”
Rev. Dr. Kevin Yoho, transformation pastor of Cold Spring Presbyterian Church, delivered the invocation.
After wreaths had been ceremoniously placed indoors and had been blessed, “Taps” was played.
The crowd exited the building to the cemetery where individuals helped place red-ribbon-trimmed evergreen wreaths on graves of veterans from various wars throughout the 100-acre cemetery.
Some wreaths had already been placed by Boy Scouts from Troop 73, West Cape May.
