AVALON – The Avalon Historical Society announced the winners of its Ninth Annual W. Norman Mackey Memorial Clamshell Pitch, held July 20, on Avalon’s 30th Street beach.
According to a release, trophies were won in the singles competition, first place by Rob Broadwater, singles second place was won by Randy Dean, doubles competition, first place went to Rob Broadwater and Mark Broadwater, second place doubles was won by Randy Dean and Steve Schappell.
The contestants each received an Avalon Historical Society cap or cooler bag.
Norman Mackey taught the sport to his son Allan in the early 1940s.
The Historical Society is eager to continue the revival of the clamshell pitch with participants 16 years and older enjoying a great classic game on the beach.
