WILDWOOD – Over 1,000 plungers took to the Atlantic Ocean Jan. 11 for the annual Polar Bear Plunge.
According to a release, the start of the 2020 plunge season brought in over $330,000 to support the athletes of Special Olympics New Jersey.
Many athletes also took part, like those on one of the highest fundraising teams, the AlohAvengers.
This year’s theme for the team was anything 80s: there were ghostbuster, karate kid, and golden girl sightings, while jazzercisers, top gunners, and many more 80s icons made an appearance.
In its 13th year, Polar Bear Plunge Wildwood has raised more than $3.5 million for Special Olympics New Jersey.
For the past 50 years, Special Olympics New Jersey has provided year-round sports training and athletic competition in 24 Olympic-type sports for more than 26,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities, completely free of charge.
Through the power of sports, athletes are provided opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.
