Wildwood Crest Honors Olympian Joe Maloy

WILDWOOD CREST — The Borough of Wildwood Crest’s Board of Commissioners honored Olympic triathlete and Wildwood Crest native Joe Maloy III at its regular bimonthly meeting on Wed., March 29, in the courtroom of borough hall.
Maloy, 31, represented the United States at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. He was the top American finisher and 23rd overall in the men’s triathlon race.
The Wildwood Crest Board of Commissioners presented Maloy with a complimentary lifetime membership to the Joseph Von Savage Memorial Pool.
“We wanted to do this as a small token of our appreciation for all that Joe has accomplished,” said Wildwood Crest Commissioner Don Cabrera. “Joe comes from a great family and is first and foremost a really good person, and he has been a great representative for not only Wildwood Crest and Cape May County but also for the state of New Jersey and the entire country. We’re extremely proud to call him one of our own.”
Maloy, who recently announced his retirement from competitive triathlon racing, spoke briefly to the large audience gathered at the meeting.
“It definitely means lot seeing all of you here,” said Maloy, who attended Crest Memorial Elementary School and Wildwood Catholic High School. “All I did was see an opportunity and I thought it might be cool, and that it would be a cool way to share a story and tell people something. All of you made a choice to listen and maybe be affected by that in some small way. If I could still communicate that message, I would just like for people to see opportunities as citizens of an awesome town. We all have different opportunities and they’re all very cool and all very unique. I think if you see that opportunity maybe you have the courage to go for it.
“I was fortunate that I grew up with great parents and they both served our town. They raised me with the idea to do what’s important to you but to remember that other people help you and support you because the best things don’t happen by yourself but with the help of a lot of people. I really want to thank everyone for being part of my story and thank you for giving me the opportunity to represent you.”
