Volunteer Beach Cleanup to be Held Dec. 20

Beach Cleanup

By Press Release

WILDWOOD CREST – Join Friends of Cape May National Wildlife Refuge Dec. 20 from noon until 2 p.m. for a Volunteer Beach Cleanup at the Two Mile Beach Unit of the Refuge. Meet at the VisitorCenter, located near the former Coast Guard Loran Station at 12001 Pacific Ave. (Ocean Dr.) in Wildwood Crest at noon.
Each winter and spring we try to do our best to get the beach ready for our soon-to-arrive resident nesting and migrating birds. We will provide light refreshments as well as all necessary tools such as recyclable trash bags, gloves, safety equipment, etc. This is a perfect activity for families, 4H Clubs, school groups, scouts, or individuals looking to make a difference.
While we walk the beach, be on the lookout for wintering and migrating shorebirds such as red knots (which have been seen there lately), sanderlings, and terns, as well as seabirds such as loons, gannets and scoters.  Several whales and dolphins have also been spotted offshore there recently!
This event is sponsored by Friends of Cape May NWR. Please let us know if you are planning on coming by emailing info@friendsofcapemayrefuge.org. We hope to see you there! Our Nature Store at Two Mile will be open that day as well, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. for your last-minute holiday shopping.
Note: It’s often windier and cooler on the beach than on land, so dress accordingly.  If you have a reusable or biodegradable trash bag, basket or box, please feel free to bring it.  We are trying to avoid using plastic non-degradable trash bags whenever possible! We will also be sorting out recyclables at the end of the walk.
