OCEAN CITY – Ocean City American Legion Post 524 will welcome another service member to “America’s Favorite Family Resort” June 17, when it hosts U.S. Army Reserve Capt. Joanne T. Schultze and her family for a week’s vacation, courtesy of the organization’s Rest and Relaxation Program.
The Schultze family will be honored during a lunchtime welcoming ceremony at Post 524, following a police and fire department motorcade and an escort into town by the Legion Riders. The family will be given the use of a free condominium for the week, as well as a multitude of gifts from local Ocean City businesses as a way to say “Thank you for your service and sacrifice.”
“This is the fifth consecutive year that Ocean City’s American Legion Post 524 has hosted military service personnel and their families while they enjoy our shore community and its many amenities,” stated Jerry Bonner, chairman of the Rest and Relaxation Committee.
Schultze, a seven-year veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve, joined the military in 2011, following leadership roles at The Pennsylania Veterans Museum, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), and various legal positions. She is a graduate of St. Peters College and Pace University Law School. Currently, she serves the military as a Judge Advocate General.
When she is not in service to her country, Schultze is the director of operations at the USO of Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey, where she manages programs and services for the military community at the Philadelphia Airport, Joint Base McGuire/Dix/Lakehurst, and Fort Indiantown Gap.
Schultze’s active duty assignments have included The U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pa.; The Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center in Charlottesville, Va.; and Commission Officer’s School at Fort Benning, Ga.
The Schultze family lives in Yardley, Philadelphia and also includes Schultze’s two children, Sara, 19, and Emma, 17, Schultze’s mother, Maria, 72, and her grandmother, Gina, 92.
“I am truly appreciative for the generosity of the American Legion,” stated Schultze. “I have not been on a vacation with my family since 2015.”
“The Veterans Rest and Relaxation Program began in 2013 as a way to pay tribute to servicemen and women for sacrifices made during their time in the military,” stated Bonner. “Whenever military personnel are deployed, their families also share in that deployment and we support their efforts as well.”
The public is invited to attend the ceremony, beginning at noon, at the Morvay-Miley American Legion Post 524, located at 46th Street and West Avenue.
