Freeholders Gerald Thornton and E. Marie Hayes are working hard for Cape May County:
- Under their leadership, Cape May County maintains a very low tax rate – the second lowest in the state.
- Economic growth has increased significantly over the past several years.
- With E. Marie Hayes as the Cape May County Tourism Department liaison, Cape May County continues to maintain its status as a top vacation destination. In 2018, Cape May County’s tourism spending climbed nearly 4% ($244 million) to hit the $6.6 billion figure.
- Gerald Thornton and E. Marie Hayes strongly oppose a sanctuary county, where an individual convicted of a dangerous crime could end up back on the streets of Cape May County following his or her prison term.
- Gerald Thornton and E. Marie Hayes, along with Sheriff Bob Nolan, have instituted a lawsuit in Federal Court against the attorney general to block ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement).
- Gerald Thornton and E. Marie Hayes are spearheading Fare-Free Transportation expansion and improvements.
Gerald Thornton and E. Marie Hayes bring proven leadership to Cape May County. They are long-time supporters of schools, veterans, economic development, seniors, families, and public safety; and they put Cape May County first and work full-time to address the needs of every resident.
Gerald Thornton and E. Marie Hayes are dedicated to fostering the county’s economic growth by supporting development at the Cape May County Airport. They support the fishing/oyster, agritourism, and beverage tourism industries, along with the growing drone industry, which promises high-paying, full-time jobs.
While Gov. Murphy and the New Jersey attorney general are attempting to make New Jersey a sanctuary state, Gerald Thornton, E. Marie Hayes, the Freeholder Board, and Sheriff Bob Nolan are committed to opposing any directive in this regard. Cape May County will not become a sanctuary county.
Gerald Thornton and E. Marie Hayes have made Fare-Free Transportation services in Cape May County a priority. A new pilot program, Fare-Free Now is an “Uber-like” service spearheaded by them, that would allow residents to schedule same-day transportation through a free custom phone app. Additionally, a $1.2 million Federal Transportation Authority (FTA) grant will be used to construct new Fare-Free office buildings that will improve and consolidate operations into one larger location.
Gerald Thornton is a proud Air Force veteran. He has served as freeholder director for the past seven years and is the longest serving freeholder in the county.
He is on the Executive Board of the New Jersey Association of Counties, as well as an active member of the South Jersey Freeholders’ Association. He was named Freeholder of the Year in 2015, by the New Jersey Association of Counties.
E. Marie Hayes has served as a freeholder for the past seven years. She is a retired captain of detectives, with a career protecting women and children. She is vice-president of the New Jersey Association of Counties and the South Jersey Freeholders Association.
In 2020, E. Marie Hayes will be the first woman from Cape May County to become president of these associations.
Together, Freeholders Gerald Thornton and E. Marie Hayes will continue their mission of providing effective, efficient and affordable government services for Cape May County.
