Sea Isle City Girl to Be Featured on Billboard

By Press Release

SEA ISLE CITY — Each year, little girls wearing green and brown knock on neighbor’s doors, place tables near supermarket entrances and ask their parents to bring order sheets to work – all in an attempt to sell Girl Scout cookies and raise funds for future scouting endeavors.
In addition to their cheery smiles, friendly greetings and tempting cookies, their efforts are aided by a sizable advertising campaign, which varies state-by-state.
This year, the image of a young girl from Sea Isle City will grace roadside billboards and other print advertisements here in New Jersey – and her parents could not be more proud.
More than a year ago, Rebecca Bretzke, 8, and other members of Brownie Troop No. 42983 were invited to the Girl Scout’s Central and Southern New Jersey Headquarters to be photographed for an upcoming Girl Scout newsletter.
Months after she smiled for the camera inside the scout’s New Brunswick office, Rebecca’s parents received word that their daughter’s image is going to be used on billboards in support of the Girl Scout’s 2011 Cookie Campaign. This was something no one in the Britzka family saw coming.
“We received a phone call just before Christmas with the news – and it was a total surprise,” said Rebecca’s mother, Marita Bretzke. “They said that Rebecca has the right look they wanted and that she would be appearing on billboards across the state. We are all very excited.”
Rebecca’s mother added that her daughter is not a professional model, although she certainly is “a character.”
“I don’t think she has ever seriously considered being a model, but this seems to suit her,” her mother said. “I can see her being a model – or even a lawyer – because she is very outgoing and she loves to interact with people. Rebecca is trying not to make a big deal about being on the billboards.”
A brownie for three years, Rebecca is a third grade student at Sea Isle City Public School and one of four siblings in the Bretzke’s Sea Isle City home. The 12 girls who make up her troop regularly meet in Court House and enjoy many rewarding activities, including various community-service projects and taking trips together.
According to Melissa Blake, marketing and brand manager for Girl Scouts of Central and Southern New Jersey, their 2011 Cookie Campaign will take place between Jan. 20 and mid-February, offering eight varieties of cookies at $3.50 per box. Additionally, the program is the largest girl-led business in the United States, generating over $700 million for girls and communities nationwide.
To learn where you can purchase Girl Scout cookies, visit www.gscsnj.org or phone (800) 582-7692 for more details – and be sure to look for Rebecca’s face on billboards as you travel through the Garden State.
