Wildwood Middle School eight grader, Matthew Christopher, placed first in the school’s science fair on Wednesday Jan. 14 at the Wildwoods Convention Center, and as a result he will be representing the school for the first time at the Regional Science Fair Competition at Stockton in March. The regional science fair will be in conjunction with Greater Delaware Valley Science fair from March 31 to April 2. This is the school’s third annual science fair.
Christopher, whose father is an environmental scientist, completed a project on soil bor-ing, where he tested soil at a Middle Township lot to determine if it met the criteria for construction. He collected soil samples and compared them to State specs to determine soil stability.
“I determined I could build a house and put up a septic (system there),” Christopher said. He intends to become an environmental engineer one day.
Judges were volunteers, from within the community, including representatives from local businesses, the Coast Guard base, and the Wetlands Institute, as well as, former science teachers from Wildwood High School. Judging was based on scientific thought, display board presentation, data analysis, thoroughness of experimentation and a research paper. The pro-jects covered areas of Earth, Life and Physical Science.
Students took home 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes, as well as honorable mention for each grade level. Contact Cawley at: (609) 886-8600 ext. 47 or mcawley@cmcherald.com
