Sixth Grader Inspires Bill to Get State Flag Flown in More Spots

By Jack Fichter

CAPE MAY — The entire sixth grade class from Cape May Elementary School came to City Council Dec. 1 with the idea of getting the New Jersey State Flag flown over all schools and businesses in the state.
“We should be proud of our state flag and all that it has to offer,” said student Hana Feulner, who came up with the idea.
She said when she rides through Maryland, she sees that state’s flag being “flown everywhere,” but not in New Jersey.
Feulner gave her request in a letter to Mayor Edward J. Mahaney Jr. at a Veteran’s Day assembly at her school as well as a copy to Sen. Jeff Van Drew (D-1st).
Mahaney said Van Drew, along with assemblymen Nelson Albano and Matt Milam (D-1st), intend to introduce legislation early in 2010 encourage the state flag being flown. The mayor said Van Drew plans to hold a press conference at Cape May Elementary School and invite the sixth graders to Trenton when the bill is introduced.
Cape May Superintendent of Public Works Robert Smith said the city has flagpoles in 10 locations, two of which contain three single poles. He said he would fit city’s other eight flagpoles with yardarms so they can fly the American Flag, state and city flags.
Mahaney said when Van Drew, Albano and Milam write their bills, City Council will support it with a resolution. He said the students should be present when Cape May raises the state flag at its new locations.
