“Give me your tired, your poor,” and your middle school students longing to learn how difficult immigration to a new country can be. That’s the message Ocean City High School students delivered to the Fifth and Sixth graders from Sea Isle City Elementary School, who attended a daylong immigration project at the high school on March 19.
The students arrived at the immigrant processing center, dressed as they imagined the travelers to Ellis Island would have more than a century ago. They wore hats, long skirts, well-worn jackets, and at times, looks of confusion and anticipation, as they navigated the challenges presented at four different immigration stations.
High school students clad in maroon “uniforms” played the roll of inspectors, speaking to the young “immigrants” in Spanish to illustrate how non-English speaking arrivals may have felt as they attempted to enter the new world.
