MAYS LANDING – In an unprecedented year with the COVID-19 pandemic, it was of paramount importance to Atlantic Cape Community College to celebrate the Class of 2020 graduates for their achievements and hard work. With input from students, faculty, and staff, the college has designed a virtual graduation, which will take place June 11, at 6 p.m., through YouTube, Facebook, and Atlantic Cape’s website.
According to a release, the event will include all the pomp and circumstance of a traditional ceremony with keynote speakers, graduate name announcements, and a customizable dedicated slide for each graduate.
“By using technology, we can connect with our graduates safely and innovatively,” stated Atlantic Cape President Dr. Barbara Gaba. “This is an exciting opportunity for graduates to participate and be recognized. Our students have worked so hard to get to graduation day, and we want to honor that dedication in the best way possible, given the current circumstances.”
Atlantic Cape hopes that students will hold remote viewing parties with their family and friends to celebrate. The college encourages the graduates to share their photos and videos on social media by using #AtlanticCape2020 and email pictures of their time at Atlantic Cape to media@atlantic.edu. During the virtual ceremony, each graduate will be recognized with the announcement of their full name, academic program, the degree they are receiving, and honors distinctions. Graduates will also get a chance to share a personalized quote, photo, and 12-second video announcement recorded by them.
Dr. Gaba will welcome the Class of 2020 in the virtual ceremony, and Mr. Dennis Kelly, an Atlantic Cape graduate and veteran, will deliver the commencement speech. Mr. Kelly currently serves as the senior vice president and chief enrollment officer at Wilmington College. There will also be speeches by Student Government Association President Joelle Motley and remarks by the High Honors Student Madison Conway.
In addition to having a virtual ceremony, the class that graduates in June is invited to walk with the fall graduates in a traditional commencement Dec. 5, at Harrah’s Atlantic City. The nursing graduates will also be recognized with a formal pinning ceremony this fall.
