VILLAS – Tucked away by the bay off of Bates Avenue in Villas sits St. Barnabas Church. This quaint little church, the southern-most church on the mainland of New Jersey in the Episcopal diocese, is celebrating its 70th birthday.
On Sept. 24, Mayor Michael Beck of Lower Township presented the church with a proclamation for all of the work St. Barnabas does for the community.
The church has many services such as a self-sustained community thrift shop and a food pantry that provides for approximately 600 locals each month. St. Barnabas hosts many community programs including educational programs, a food stamp nutrition program, sponsors a local Cub Scout Troop, and offers free yoga and Zumba classes.
Mother Lisa Hoffman, vicar of St. Barnabas, is celebrating her fifth year at the church and has many plans to bring more services to the community, specifically to children. Hoffman hopes to bring an after-school homework program and summer lunch or breakfast program to the church since children still need balanced meals when school is out.
Hoffman explained the community plays a huge role in giving back thanks to the generosity of citizens. While 70 years is a milestone, the church plans for many more.
