Regular Exercise Important for Prevention

By Sponsored Content

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, turning our focus on the need to increase women’s attention on preventive steps for earlier detection and most importantly prevention. As an Exercise Physiologist and a regular daily exerciser, I stress the importance of regular physical activity for all ages regardless of your age, physical limitations or your health. Regular exercise is an important part of being as healthy as you can be. More and more research is showing that exercise can reduce the risk of breast cancer coming back (recurrence) if you’ve been previously diagnosed, as well as reducing the risk of developing breast cancer if you’ve never been diagnosed.
An 8.5 year study followed 59,000 postmenopausal women. During this time, more than 21,000 of the women were diagnosed with primary invasive breast cancer. Women who in the previous four years had done regular exercise at least four hours per week were 10 % less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer than those who did less exercise. The study further shows exercise at modest intensity seemed to have a rapid impact on preventing breast cancer and there is need to continue to exercise because the effect quickly diminished after exercise ceased.
Why Exercise?
• It Reduces the Risk of Breast Cancer
• It Lowers the Risk of Breast Cancer Coming Back
• Maintains a Healthy Weight
• Ease Treatment Side Effects
• Boost Your Energy
• It Makes You Feel Good
When you first start out exercise, seek assistance from a certified fitness instructor who can set you up with a sound exercise program tailored to your needs.
