Correctional Officer Supervisor

In 1990 at the age of 25, I was promoted to Sergeant. My initial assignment was for four years on the 4-12 shift, then for two years on the 8-4 shift. As Sergeant, I was responsible for the safe, secure and orderly operation of the correctional center by supervising a group of officers under the Command of the Shift Lieutenant. My specific responsibilities included: staff scheduling, training, evaluations and disciplinary actions. The priority of my position was to ensure that the facility and the inmate population were safely and securely managed. In 1996, I was promoted to Shift Lieutenant where I served the next four years between the 12-8 shift and the 8-4 shift. As the Shift Lieutenant, I was the Administrative Officer and directly supervised the Shift Sergeants.

Experiences Obtained

As a supervisor, I completed multiple courses on supervision that focused on the best practices and theories for this managerial level position. Beyond attaining certificates of completions, I brought these educational tools directly into the workplace, giving me a greater level of knowledge, confidence and ability to face the challenges of my position. I believe my constant commitment to improve my education and training enhanced interactions with my colleagues, as well as bolstered respect from the inmates.

As Sheriff

These experiences readily apply to the role of Sheriff. With my diversified background in law enforcement, fire service and emergency management, I will bring a proficient, well-rounded understanding to the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office. Taking a proactive approach, I will work with other law enforcement professionals, businesses and community leaders to prioritize the common goal of public safety. This will lead to safer communities for the citizens and visitors of Cape May County. Please follow me on Facebook @Richardharronforsheriff. Thank you.
