Community Volunteer

In 1981, I started volunteering in my community at the age of 16 as a junior firefighter. I have served for 23 years as a firefighter, achieving life member status. In 1990, I started coaching in Lower Township and continued for 15 years. Over the years of my kids growing up, I volunteered as a coach, a referee and an umpire. I am a past president of the Lower Township Little League, past member of the Recreation Advisory Board and a founder of the Lower Cape Hockey Association.

Experiences Obtained

Starting with the volunteer fire service, I was fortunate and proud to be part of an organization dedicated to helping people in perhaps one of the most dramatic moments in their lives. I learned how trust and teamwork overcome stressful situations. As a coach, an umpire, a referee and a member of executive boards, I learned how to gain consensus with parents and other volunteers to ensure that the kids always came first. I hope along the way I encouraged kids to persevere through obstacles to achieve their best. I like to think my volunteering for the community helped shaped some productive young adults.

As Sheriff

I believe these first-hand experiences volunteering for the community are essential for a Sheriff in serving his constituents. As Sheriff, I will give the same level of concern, commitment and enthusiasm that I have given my community throughout my life to all the residents of Cape May County. Please follow me on Facebook @Richardharronforsheriff. Thank you.
