WILDWOOD – Commander Harry Weimer, of American Legion Post 184, is asking for monetary donations for gas and tolls to support the organization’s second trip to deliver items to Hurricane Irma victims in Florida.
According to Weimer, the recent trip to Florida Sept. 19 cost about $700 per truck round trip. Weimer noted five trucks with trailers made the trip to Wildwood, Fla. and nearby towns.
“The rented truck is charging 15 cents a mile, plus $496, plus gas,” stated Weimer in an email. “Already we have enough to fill that truck plus my 14-foot trailer.
“I know plenty of you have already donated, but please see it in your heart to do it again. The people of Florida will thank you so much.”
Donations can be sent to American Legion Post 184, ATTENTION Commander, 4200 Atlantic Ave., Wildwood, NJ 08260.
Middle Township Donations
Mary Lloyd of Court House, who spearheaded donations from Middle Township residents, expressed her thanks to all residents and businesses whose generosity of goods filled about half a bay of the Court House firehouse.
“The outpouring was unbelievable,” said Lloyd as she looked over mounds of bagged clothes, baby and adult personal hygiene products and cleaning supplies.
Middle Township Elementary No. 4 collected cases of water that rested on a pallet. Court House firefighters picked up those cases on a fire truck, said David Greenberg of the Fire Inspection Office.
Lloyd mentioned that after she spoke to Middle Township Mayor Michael Clark about her plan, he offered space in the firehouse for the collection.
Legionnaires from Post 184 will pick up those donations Oct. 6, said Lloyd.
“We could not have done this without everyone’s help and support,” said Lloyd.
The second convoy is scheduled to leave the Wildwood legion post Oct. 24.
