COURT HOUSE – As part of its exhibit, “Over Here: The Great War Comes Home,” The Museum of Cape May County is offering a special presentation highlighting the critical role played by Cape May in the defense of our nation during World War I.
Local historian Jeff Hilgert will address the importance the significant military presence of Cape May during the Great War with a focus on the background and importance of Cape May’s Camp Wissahickon during a lecture to be held inside The Museum’s Military Room.
Attendees will be able to sit amid World War I uniforms, weapons and other memorabilia as Hilgert shares the details of Cape May’s surprising rise to prominence at the outset of the war.  While Camp Wissahickon’s history is short and not well-documented, the need it filled was critical.
In addition, Hilgert will share some never-before-publicly-presented collection of World War I photographs and postcards demonstrating every day naval life at Camp Wissahickon .
This event is free and open to the public. It takes place May 20 at 2 p.m.  For more information please contact The Museum of Cape May County at 609-465-3535 or visit the museum’s website at cmcmuseum.org.
