Learn Basic Sign Language At Library Workshop

Among adult instruction that will be taking place at the Cape May County Library in the new year is Beginner Sign Language Workshop.
This ten-week class begins on Jan. 5 from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. Classes will be at the Main Branch of the library located at 30 Mechanic St. in Cape May Court House.
If you are fourteen years or older, interested in learning the basics of American Sign Language and want to gain an introductory understanding of deafness as a culture, you are welcome to attend. American Sign Language is a unique visual language with grammar and linguistic structure that is different from English.
This course combines vocabulary learning with the basics of grammar and linguistics and includes a brief introduction to Deaf history and culture. This class is for anyone who has little or no knowledge of sign language, as well as individuals with some experience, but want to improve their knowledge.
The class is under the tutelage of Misty Bratton. Bratton completed the Interpreter Education Program for American Sign Language at Camden County College.
She is a member of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, both nationally and in the New Jersey chapter and has been certified for educational interpreting through the nationally recognized Educational Interpreter Proficiency Assessment.
