Looking for a way to start off 2010 with a challenge? Here’s one that will raise money for a good cause and improve your fitness and best of all, you’ll have a whole month, Jan. 18 to Feb. 18, to complete the events: a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride, and a 26-mile run (duathlon is any two of these).
The registration donation is $25 and the event is co-sponsored by the Ocean City Aquatic & Fitness Center.
Competitors can substitute gym events for the swimming, biking and running events by documenting how many laps they swim or aquasize classes they take for the swim leg of the triathlon; how many miles they bike, step or row for the bicycling portion; and how many miles they walk/run, use the elliptical or take aerobics classes for the marathon section. (An aerobics class, for instance, equates as 2-mile run.)
Everyone who enters receives a T-shirt, and everyone who finishes will receive an award. A list of finishers will be posted and an awards ceremony will take place at the Ocean City Aquatic & Fitness Center, 18th and Simpson Avenue, Ocean City, on Feb. 27.
The triathlon/duathlon is a fund-raiser for CONTACT Cape-Atlantic, a non-profit volunteer group and United Way agency that makes daily telephone reassurance calls, more than 64,000 a year, to help its elderly and disabled clients live independently at home.
Registration forms are required and are available at the Ocean City Aquatic & Fitness Center, or by calling CONTACT at 823-1850 or 463-4564, or e-mail CONTACT at contact-c-a@comcast.net or www.contactcapeatlantic.org.
