By Herald Staff

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The American Association for State and Local History has announced that Dr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Salvatore from Cold Spring are recipients of an Award of Merit from the AASLH Leadership in History Awards for their lifetime of dedication to enriching the historical community of New Jersey, according to a release.
The couples are co-founders of Historic Cold Spring Village and Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum, located Cold Spring and Erma.
The AASLH Leadership in History Awards, now in its 63rd year, is the most prestigious recognition for achievement in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history. Award winners were honored at a special banquet during the 2008 AASLH Annual Meeting in Rochester, New York, on Friday, Sept.12.
A generous contribution from The History Channel helped underwrite the cost of the awards banquet.
Dr. Joseph and Patricia Anne Salvatore have given a lifetime of enriching the historical community of New Jersey, the release stated.
The Salvatores have volunteered their lives to aid in the creation, restoration, rehabilitation, preservation and administration of two museums that have educated thousands of tourists as well as the residents of the local community on the history of Cape May County.
They continue to hold leadership positions within both state and local organizations and continue their stewardship with respect for saving local historic structures from destruction.
The AASLH awards program was initiated in 1945 to establish and encourage standards of excellence in the collection, preservation, and interpretation of state and local history throughout the United States. The AASLH Leadership in History Awards not only honor significant achievement in the field of state and local history, but also
brings public recognition of the opportunities for small and large organizations, institutions, and programs to make contributions in this arena.
