Only Brave, Hearty Take Plunge for Special Olympics

By Al Campbell

WILDWOOD — Special Olympics New Jersey’s Polar Bear Plunge off the Convention Center beach Sat., Jan. 14 drew several thousand. Many took a dip in the chilly Atlantic Ocean while hundreds of others, bundled up against the unrelenting wind, watched and snapped photos of their brave “bears.”
According to the Special Olympics New Jersey website, over $119,000 had been raised at the local plunge as of 3:30 p.m. Jan. 14.
Bathers, clad in everything from Speedos and bikinis to colorful costumes, screamed as they raced from the damp sand into the murky waves. Off to the sides, police and rescue units stood ready to aid any who had overdone their winter sport.
