EGG HARBOR — February is traditionally “heart month” and the season to celebrate love. But for the clients and agencies served by the Community FoodBank of New Jersey -Southern Branch it is also a season of great need. More people than ever in this food bank’s 23 year history are food insecure and reaching out for help. In 2009 the organization distributed a record breaking 5.7 million pounds of food –an increase of 36% over 2008.
Each week, the Community FoodBank of New Jersey’s–Southern Branch distributes more than 110,000 pounds of groceries to over 230 charities throughout Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and southern Burlington counties. However, while distribution is increasing donations are down.
According to food bank officials, there was a reduction of 9.4 % in food donated in 2009 over 2008. “This is not surprising, said Margie Barham, executive director of the southern branch, “after all, more people are in need and many people who usually donate are now in need.”
With recent attention and charitable donations directed towards the earthquake in Haiti, funds too have taken a hit. “There is a certain amount of donor fatigue,” said Barham. “People continue to be generous, but are more conservative than in previous years. We are hopeful however that the community will find a way to support the needs of the hungry here at home too.” She noted that for every $1 donated, the food bank can acquire $8 to $10 worth of food.
Donations of food and funds can be dropped off at the Community FoodBank of New Jersey –Southern Branch at 6735 Black Horse Pike in Egg Harbor Township, Monday through Friday, 8 to 4:30, and most Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. Call 609-383-8843 for more information.
