Grassroots Website ‘Capt. Stone’s Log’ Gives Local Stone Harbor Insight

By Leslie Truluck

STONE HARBOR – It’s not a blog, it’s a log.
Resident Charlie Koch, along with a “crew” of a dozen volunteer photographers and writers, has worked on “Captain Stone’s Log,” www.captainstoneslog.com, a new grassroots Web site to provide local insight into borough happenings.
Koch writes from the persona of Capt. Stone, an English seaman who is credited with having named the borough when he sought refuge in the borough’s back bay from a storm.
The purpose, Koch said, is to provide an informative Web site that is consistently updated to inform townspeople on history and lure, community events and all things Stone Harbor.
“We hope this can become the premiere site for Stone Harbor,” he said.
Koch said the Web site has already generated about 300 page views as of June 12.
Email subscribers can receive newsletters to let them know when there’s a pancake breakfast or family-friendly event.
With a plethora of knowledge about the borough that only a local who eats, sleeps and breathes Stone Harbor could accumulate, Koch provides histories of organizations like the Women’s Civic Club and The Stone Harbor Garden Club among interesting factoids.
“I couldn’t do this all myself,” he said. “We’ve got a real good team of people who are dedicated, because they believe in bettering the town through communication.”
Links to other useful sites, including Stone Harbor’s beloved Cape May County Herald, help Web site visitors navigate the overwhelming high seas of the Internet.
“We have a lot of neat ideas. We’re just getting started,” Koch said.
He intends to send notifications to all borough taxpayers to gain readership and keep the page consistently updated.
“We aren’t out to make money or gain commercial revenue through ads,” Koch said. “We intend to advertise barbeques and pancake breakfasts.”
“It’s not intended to divide the town but rather bring it together and inform people of what’s happening,” Koch said.
One of his goals is to gain more community involvement in Borough Council, Planning and Zoning boards.
“We will present facts, not opinions,” Koch said. “We want to make it fun and provide ‘the rest of the story’,” Koch jibbed with his best Paul Harvey imitation.
Since his retirement last March, Koch has fully delved into the Web site with the same dedication he had for his career.
“It’s a small town and a great place to live. Stone Harbor needs all the good press it can get on all the wonderful things going on here,” he said.
