AVALON –– Avalon Free Public Library has collaborated with the Avalon Historical Society and is now deemed the Avalon Free Public Library History Center, as of Oct. 1.
The Avalon Historical Society, a non-profit organization, will concentrate on fundraising, collection development, preservation, conversation and programming.
The merger is expected to broaden reach into the community and offer patrons new and expanded opportunities.
“This exciting new venture for the library will further expand our mission of cultural enrichment for our community,” Library Trustee Carole Hensel said.
Library Director Norman Gluckman has appointed Joseph Angemi of Williamstown as the director of the History Center, effective Nov. 3.
Angemi, whose background includes employment with the Independence National Park Service, brings extensive site administration, interpretation, programming and conservation experience to the history center.
“I am excited to join the AFPL history center at its crossroads. After years of work as a professional interpreter, museum specialist, and conservator, I’m happy to be able to add my skills to the advancement of the center. The new approach will allow the community to experience Avalon history in an exciting new way,” Angemi said.
“The library will gain some additional space, the Historical Society can now focus on their mission, and all state and local historical materials can be consolidated into one logical location. This collaboration will enable the history center to better tell Avalon’s story,” Gluckman said.
“The merger that has come to life as a result of the Library Board and the Historical Society Board regarding the Avalon Museum is a phenomenal step forward for our community. The addition of the Director is such an asset to our community, we will be able to continue to share and enhance our history and culture. He will guide the Historical Society in expanding and preserving collections,” Historical Society Chair Barbara Juzaitis added.
Angemi will speak at the Avalon Home and Land Owners Association meeting Saturday, Dec.13 at 10 a.m. at the Avalon Senior Center near Borough Hall on Dune Drive.
