CAPE MAY — Votes have been counted and the winners of the 6th Annual Scarecrow Contest sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) are in.
The grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St., were transformed for Halloween and became the setting for 31 goofy goblins and spooky spectres created by members of the community that adorned the walkways of the estate, from Oct. 10 through Nov. 2. Visitors to the estate during this time put in their written ballot for their favorite scarecrows in one of five categories: “Individuals or Families,” “Businesses,” “Non-profits, Church, Club, Scout Troops,” “School Class” or “Munchkin.” MAC provided straw and two wooden cross stakes for registrants.
Winners were chosen based on the number of ballot votes from visitors to the estate in each category, with an overall winner receiving the People’s Choice Award and $200. New this year was the addition of the category for children aged 3-10, the “Munchkin” category, with smaller-sized stakes available for the youngsters. Also new this year was a free Scarecrow Workshop, on Oct. 4 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., during the Harvest Festival Crafts & Antiques Show on the grounds of the Physick Estate.
The winners are:
• People’s Choice Award (Given to the scarecrow with the most votes): “Cape May Diamonds are a Ghoul’s Best Friend” by the Ladies of the Cape May Point Social Club. Prize: $200
• Individual/Family: “Miss Metal” by Penelope Cake & Jeff Arfer. Prize: $100
• Munchkin (ages 3 to 10): “Puppa Pumpkin” by Penelope Wolff. Prize: Pizza party for winner and 10 friends.

• Non-profit, Church, Club, Scout Troop: “Granny Crow” Easter Seals New Jersey. Prize: Pizza party for clients.
• School Class: “Beware the Great Trunkman Charlie Brown” DCF Regional School Cape May Campus. Prize: Pizza party
• Over the past few years, MAC has provided a special trophy to the Cape May Elementary School. The class with the most votes receives the trophy — and bragging rights— to keep for the school year. This year “Zombie Surfer” Mrs. Neuman’s 1st Grade Class won the honors.
