NORTH CAPE MAY – New 18-year-old Eagle Scout Andrew Holloway has built upon the foundation laid by his older brother Nate two years ago in creating a gazebo and play environment for the children at Family Promise of North Cape May.
Friends and elected officials gathered in the rear yard of this social service agency on Townbank Road near Bayshore to dedicate a gazebo that Holloway and his Troop 79 friends, his father Jeffrey and older brother built atop of the existing deck that Eagle Scout Nate had built for his project two years prior.
Holloway, of Marmora, learned about the work done by Family Promise from his brother and other scouts. He had seen what the rundown and muddy yard area had looked like two years ago. He decided that although tents placed on the deck were sufficient, a gazebo would be larger and safer in bad weather.
Holloway plans to study environmental science and sustainable energy at Green Mountain College in Vermont in the fall. The project cost approximately $8,000, money that Family Promise did not have, and so Holloway raised the money through donations of materials and cash.
He also obtained a zoning variance and building permits for the project. Freeholder Jeffrey Pierson presented Holloway with a Certificate of Appreciation from the freeholder board.
Assemblyman Robert Andrzejczak and Sen. Jeff Van Drew (both D-1st) arrived to add their congratulations.
