Dennis Township Schoolhouse Museum Now Recording Oral Histories

By Press Release

DENNISVILLE – Committeeman Al Dicicco has unveiled two new programs aimed at allowing residents to connect with their historical roots, and leave something for future generations, at the Old Schoolhouse Museum, in the heart of historic Dennisville.
The first is a project to record the oral histories of local veterans, and Dennis Township seniors. The first-hand accounts of local military connections, storms, business, and general Dennis Township history will be archived for listening by future generations. Dicicco, who oversees the museum, said “The best way to preserve the character of your town is by knowing its history. One hundred years from now these recordings will be a learning tool for students, historians, elected officials, everyone. We want to preserve these stories of a simpler time so they may live on for generations.” The project began last week, and will continue as long as people wish to share their stories. Several appointments have already been scheduled with interested residents.
The other program is a joint venture with Ancestry.com to provide family history searches free of charge through the museum’s terminal. “The goal is to give the residents a personal connection to our town, which is so rich in history. We’ve been working hard on getting this program for months, to see our neighbors having such a great time learning about themselves through their family history, it’s really exciting,” said Dicicco.
If you or someone you know would be willing to share their stories for the oral history project, or would like more information on either program, please contact Al Dicicco at (609) 412-9424 or Ray Rebmann, Dennis Township Historian, at (609) 861-1899. The museum  is free of charge and open to the public the first and third Saturdays of every month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is located at 681 Petersburg Road in Dennisville.
