The DTMS Student Government Shrek Scarecrow Committee included advisor Amanda Unkle

By Press Release

DENNISVILLE – Dennis Township Elementary and Middle Schools have had a busy couple of weeks.
According to a release, in Ms. Gonnam’s American Sign Language Hawk Block, middle school students learned signs for common places and objects around the school, then created signs to label the spaces throughout the school.

Sixth-grade students and teachers ran a successful fundraiser for their three-day camping trip to Camp Mason later in the year.
Students sold 350 apple pies that they then made from scratch – crust, filling, and topping. Pie sales raised $920 toward their trip.
Eighth-grade students assisted the sixth graders throughout the day.

DTMS Student Government designed and created a Shrek scarecrow for the Cape May MAC scarecrow competition at the Emelyn Physick Estate in Cape May. Students modeled, formed, and painted Shrek’s head, hands, feet, and even an onion because everyone knows that ogres are like onions, they have layers.
Shrek boasts a hand-crafted wooden sign crafted by Samantha and Chloe Kretschmer’s grandfather and painted by Samantha, Julia Harris, and Maggie Herouvis, so he became a true community project.

The Elementary and Middle Schools held a homeroom scarecrow competition where each homeroom created and presented a scarecrow to be displayed in front of the schools. The scarecrows survived some serious wind and rain on their first evening up, but have persevered.
Students and staff voted for their favorites and the winning homeroom, Ms. Unkle’s seventh-grade class, won a pizza party. Second place went to Ms. Sharkey’s fourth-grade class and third place went to Mrs. Riggitano’s fifth-grade class.

Music teacher, Mr. Saul, runs a Rock Band Hawk Block that just so happens to be all girls. For a Halloween surprise, LDTC Melanie Caruso joined the All-Girls Rock Band for some favorites: “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” “Rollin’ Down the River,” and “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran.
