Coast Guard Medevacs 30-year-old man Near Cape May

By Press Release

CAPE MAY ─ The Coast Guard medevaced a 30-year-old man from a 48-foot fishing vessel approximately 72 miles east of Cape May on Tuesday.
Crewmembers from the fishing vessel Miss Tamara contacted Coast Guard watchstanders at 1:17 a.m. via VHF-FM radioreporting a crewmember was experiencing stomach pains and was in need of medical assistance.
An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Atlantic Cityhoisted the man and transported him to the air station where he was transferred to awaiting emergency medical personnel and transported to Atlanticare Medical Center in Pomona.
“Having a marine band radio aboard the fishing vessel greatly aided in the Coast Guard’s quick response,” said Lt. Chuck Clark, the helicopter commander at the air station. “We had excellent communication with the crewmembers aboard the Miss Tamara. It was very helpful while hoisting the rescue swimmer and patient, so we could get the victim transferred to EMS for treatment.”
VHF-FM radio is the best method of communication while on the water, according to the Coast Guard. Although cell phones are a good backup, they can be unreliable due to gaps in coverage area and the inevitable dead battery.
