CAPE MAY– Cape May County kids wearing life jackets while boating this summer will not only be staying safe, but also could be rewarded with an ice cream treat.
The Coast Guard Auxiliary partners with the Milky Way Ice Cream stand this year to provide a reward to youngsters who are observed by Coast Guard Auxiliary Vessel Examiners (VE’s) wearing a life jacket while boating. The reward consists of a coupon that entitles the child to a free soft-serve cone from Milk Way Ice Cream, 2404 Bayshore Road in Villas.
The Kids Life Jacket Reward was created by area Auxiliarists to encourage kids to enjoy the water safely. NJ Law requires life jackets to be worn by children 12 years old and younger when aboard any watercraft when the craft is under way (not tied up at a dock or permanent mooring).
The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed civilian volunteer component of the Coast Guard. The Auxiliary, which was created by Congress in 1941, currently has over 30,000 members.
The program runs from July 1st through September 5th this year.
