Children Have Fun Learning to Cook at Junior Chefs Camp

COURT HOUSE – Twelve children ages 8 to 12 are beating the heat this week as they learn the basics of cooking at Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County Family & Community Health Sciences’ (FCHS) Junior Chefs I Cooking Camp.   This week’s camp is one of two sessions taking place this summer for aspiring young chefs.   Junior Chefs II Class will run from Aug. 1 through Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Rutgers Cooperative Extension, 355 Court House-South Dennis Road, Cape May Court House, New Jersey. Both sessions are full.
Marilou Rochford, MA, CFLE, Rutgers Cooperative Extension Family & Community Health Sciences Educator said, “So far this week, the children were taught about the importance of eating breakfast and were shown how to make a variety of foods that meet a good breakfast guideline.   The children also learned about “Smart Snacking” as they prepared a selection of snacks including Peachy Peanut Butter Pita Pockets, Apple-icious Oat Bars and  trail mix.”  Rochford added, “Both camps are  hands-on and teach the children cooking skills plus show them  how to prepare a variety of foods and snacks incorporating nutrition education with food preparation lessons to encourage a lifetime of healthy eating habits.”
