CAPE MAY – The annual Richard and Joan Behr Exceptional Service Award of the Center for Literacy (CFL) in Old City Philadelphia was recently presented to Jo Ann Fishburn.
A retired public school reading specialist, Fishburn, volunteers her time to tutor twenty adult learners, spending over 13 hours a week in small group sessions with individuals who are beginning readers. On her own time, she also produced a video highlighting the determination of several men and women who are taking advantage of CFL’s services.
Fishburn derives tremendous personal satisfaction from appreciative adults in her classes. “It is unbelievably thrilling,” said Fishburn, “when someone tells you how great they feel, now that they can write their own check at the bank. Or that their heart beats faster when they catch themselves unconsciously reading something.”
The Center for Literacy depends on volunteer tutors to meet the demand for services and is always seeking college graduates to join in their work. Anyone who is interested is encouraged to contact CFL through their website www.centerforliteracy.org or to phone 215-474-1235.
