CAPE MAY – Chief Anthony Marino announced a no-shave initiative this November. During this time, the department will be temporarily waiving part of the grooming policy which will allow participating officers and civilian employees to grow facial hair. The initiative this year is being used to help a local person in need.
The department’s participation this year will be to raise money for Veronica Townsend, who was involved in a near-fatal car accident on the Garden State Parkway. After being airlifted to AtlantiCare, Townsend spent six days in the ICU and was treated for pneumonia due to aspiration. Her left arm was shattered and will require multiple surgeries and plates to repair. Her rehabilitation is ongoing and extensive and due to a lapse in coverage for this catastrophic event, the resulting medical bills have climbed to a point where she needs help.
Townsend works for Nauti Spirits Distillery, and they are also currently helping with fundraising for her.
The department has set up a GoFundMe account to allow people to donate to the cause.
