Cape May County Culture & Heritage is a Division within the Cape May County Department of Tourism. The Division of Culture & Heritage is dedicated to working in partnership with Cape May County cultural and heritage organizations to encourage public interest and participation in history, the arts and the cultural traditions of the community. One of the primary purposes of the Division is to apply to the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and the New Jersey Historical Commission for grant funds that can be then re-granted to local organizations for operating support or special projects and programs.
The Division also plans programs and exhibits of its own to encourage the public to support local arts and history. This year, the Division hosted an exhibit and programs for Black History Month on George Henry White, founder of Whitesboro; an exhibit and programs for Women’s History Month on Women in the Military; and an exhibit by local artist Cheryl Crews at the Division’s Thomas Beesley Jr, House. In May, the Division will host an exhibit and programs for Jewish American Heritage Month and in September, an exhibit and programs for Hispanic Heritage Month.
In June, the Division is hosting Art & You at the Park & Zoo, an outdoor art show featuring local artists and artisans. In conjunction with Art & You, the Division will introduce Zootography, a photography experience for children. Also in June, GABLES will sponsor an art exhibit in the Beesley House.
The Division, under the direction of Freeholder E. Marie Hayes, also holds technical workshops for local arts and history organizations on Long Range Planning, Marketing on Social Media, Grant Writing and other topics that assist them in strengthening their organizations.
