Cape Assist Peer Leadership Confab Links Students, Community Leaders

By

WILDWOOD – Cape Assist announces the annual Peer Leadership Conference to be held at the Wildwood Convention Center Nov. 20.
This annual event, invites student leaders from all of the school districts in Cape May County to participate in informative workshops, classes, games and projects that will empower them to set examples for their peers.
This year’s theme is “Local Success,” so the classes will teach students how to develop leadership skills and how to start down a successful career path. “This event gives Cape Assist the forum to teach young people the skills needed to make a difference and influence their peers in a positive way,” said Kim Mounce, coordinator, Cape May County Healthy Community Coalition.
Students will be able to visit various community group displays and participate in educational workshops. The opening session will feature a panel of local successful professionals: Mia Chiarella, Peter Belasco, Mario Nocito, Lakeisha Davis, and Christine Winans, all graduates of Cape May County.
The student leaders will have an opportunity to interact with the members of the panel. Furthermore, Wildwood’s John Lynch will teach youth how a simple act of kindness can make an impact on someone’s life in a workshop “The Power of Community – Pay It Forward.”
Students from Cape May County Technical School, Wildwood High School, and Lower Cape May Regional High School will host other workshops. In addition, Rutgers 4-H Teen Ambassadors will mc the event.
Cape Assist will also reveal the theme of its annual public service announcement contest, open to all school aged students as a means to raise awareness of substance abuse. Students write and produce a short PSA for radio, print or television.
Due to the rising numbers of “at risk families” in Cape May County, Cape Assist is also holding a capital fundraising campaign so that it can open a Community Learning Center to help strengthen and educate families in prevention and early intervention.
The new building would allow the group to expand its preventative services and programs, provide resources to families, and offer meeting space to local community groups.
