Stone Harbor Farmer’s Market Every Sunday

By Leslie Truluck

STONE HARBOR — Fresh cut flowers, fruits, vegetables, bread, jam, berries and coffee can be found at the water tower parking lot at 95th here Sunday mornings from 8 a.m. to noon through September, depending on what the harvest has to offer.
Paradise Hill Farm provides fresh organic no-spray blueberries in the summer and dried cranberries in the fall. Owner Mary Thompson, at her first appearance at the market now in its third week, said she’s glad the borough could provide such a venue.
“We [vendors] even buy stuff from each other,” she said.
Borough Councilwoman Anne Wannen spearheaded the projected per suggestion from Lucas Manteca, chef and local restaurant owner, to provide a venue for farmers to connect with area residents, visitors and restaurant owners.
Wannen and her husband Karl volunteer at the market each Sunday to organize vendors and help with setup. Wannen said she intends to keep the market fairly small with about ten merchants so not to dilute vendors’ profit. This will keep Mike Mattera’s Nummy Town Farm and Nursery sweet Jersey corn “fresh picked this morning” at 50 cents an ear.
Linda Sikking’s business, Sikking Farms, sells fresh cut flowers grown in Vineland.
Harry Gale sells fresh-roasted organic coffee beans fair-traded from Mexico, Columbia and Nicaragua. A college English Literature major, Gale said roasting gives him time to read.
“Taste, roast, taste, roast. It’s trial and error and you have to really love coffee,” he said.
Baker Sue Totino sells fresh made sweet breads and cakes from her licensed S & S Kitchens in Rosenhaun where she said, “everything is made from scratch with no preservatives.”
Ronnie and Steve Kepchar of Lititz in Landcaster County, Pa. said the market is a great way to spend a Sunday morning.
