New Technology Breaks Down Language Barriers at Cape Regional Medical Center

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – New technology now available at Cape Regional Medical Center immediately connects patients who have limited English proficiency with medically-qualified interpreters.
Implementing InDemand Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) throughout the health system, Cape Regional Medical Center has removed all language barriers between patients and providers. Rather than waiting for an on-site interpreter to arrive, which can cause frustration for the patient and the provider, the new VRI program offers the ability to access medically-trained interpreters on tablets/iPads and portable carts that can be wheeled into a patient’s room when requested.
The new VRI system provides the hospital with access to interpreters 24 hours a day, in more than 200 languages, including American Sign Language. According to Ray Wisniewski, Director of Patient Experience, “VRI has enabled higher quality of care and improved satisfaction among patients, staff, and physicians.”
